LinkedIn Engagement Boost: Women Find Better Results By Presenting as Men

Are your LinkedIn connections recognizing you as a thought leader? Do numerous commenters praising your advice on growing your venture? Are headhunters making contact to explore opportunities?

If not, the explanation might be that you're not male.

The Experiment: Modifying Gender Identity for Increased Reach

Numerous female professionals joined an organized professional network test recently after popular discussions indicated that changing their gender to "man" enhanced their network presence.

Some participants rewrote their profiles to incorporate what they termed "masculine-oriented" language - adding results-driven professional jargon like "propel", "transform" and "expedite". Based on reports, their visibility also improved.

Algorithmic Bias Questions Raised

The improved metrics has caused some to wonder whether an inherent gender bias in LinkedIn's algorithm favors male users who use professional networking terminology.

Like many large networking sites, LinkedIn employs a computerized system to determine which content appear to which users - boosting some while suppressing others.

Platform Response

In a recent company announcement, LinkedIn recognized the trend but stated it does not consider "personal characteristics" when deciding content distribution. Rather, the company explained that "hundreds of signals" affect how content are received.

Modifying profile gender in your settings does not affect how your content shows up in results or timelines.

Individual Results

A social media consultant, who modified her gender identifiers to "he/him" and her name to "Simon E", described extraordinary outcomes.

"The statistics I'm seeing indicate a 1,600% increase in profile views and a thirteen-fold jump in impressions," she commented.

Megan Cornish, a marketing expert, started testing after noticing her audience decrease substantially.

The Method

  • Initially, she modified her profile gender to "man"
  • Subsequently, she used AI tools to rewrite her professional summary using "masculine-oriented" language
  • Lastly, she repurposed old posts with similar "assertive" style

The result was immediate: a more than fourfold rise in visibility within one week.

The Downside

Although the positive results, Cornish voiced unhappiness with the approach.

"Before, my posts were more personal - brief and insightful, but also warm and relatable," she stated. "Currently, the bro-coded version was forceful and self-assured - similar to a Caucasian man swaggering around."

She discontinued the test after one week, saying "Each day I persisted, and results improved, I became more frustrated."

Mixed Results

Not all participants encountered positive results. One writer who changed both her gender to "male" and her race to "Caucasian" described a reduction in visibility and interaction.

"We know there's systemic preference, but it's very challenging to understand how it functions in particular situations or why," she commented.

Wider Consequences

These tests occur alongside ongoing discussions about LinkedIn's distinctive role as both a business platform and community site.

Platform modifications in the past few months have apparently caused female creators experiencing markedly lower visibility, resulting in informal experiments where the same posts by male and female users received dramatically unequal reach.

System Details

Per LinkedIn, the network uses artificial intelligence to classify and distribute posts based on multiple factors, including what's shared and the user's professional identity.

The company claims it regularly evaluates its algorithms, including "examinations of gender-related disparities."

Company representative proposed that recent declines in some users' reach might originate from increased competition due to additional posts on the platform.

Changing Landscape

According to a tester observed, "masculine-oriented language" appears to be growing on the platform.

"Users typically consider LinkedIn as more professional and refined," she commented. "This is evolving. It's becoming increasingly competitive and unpredictable."
