A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence close to the Verona region to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and a third person who escaped subsequent to the incident was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area revealed the property left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the property was facing an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect a family member set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the property, the Interior Minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the incident included eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

He thought the explosion had happened on a level above the access point and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to Italian media, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
