Disputed American-supported GHF Aid Organization Concludes Aid Operations

The controversial, United States and Israel-funded Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) says it is winding down its humanitarian work in the affected area, following nearly half a year.

The organisation had already suspended its several relief locations in Gaza following the truce agreement between Hamas and Israel took effect recently.

The organization attempted to bypass the UN as the chief distributor of humanitarian assistance to Gazans.

International relief agencies declined to participate with its approach, claiming it was questionable and hazardous.

Hundreds of Palestinians were fatally wounded while trying to acquire nourishment amid disorderly situations near the organization's distribution points, primarily from Israeli forces, based on UN documentation.

Israeli authorities stated its forces fired cautionary rounds.

Program Termination

The GHF said on the beginning of the week that it was terminating work now because of the "successful completion of its crisis response", with a cumulative three million shipments containing the equivalent of more than 187 million meals provided to residents.

The foundation's chief officer, the executive director, also said the American-directed Civil-Military Coordination Center - which has been established to help execute US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan - would be "taking over and developing the system the foundation tested".

"GHF's model, in which Hamas could no longer loot and profit from stealing aid, played a huge role in getting Hamas to the table and securing a halt in hostilities."

Feedback and Statements

The militant group - which disputes allegations of misappropriation - welcomed the closure of the aid organization, as indicated by media.

A spokesman for stated GHF should be held accountable for the harm it caused to local residents.

"We urge all global human rights groups to make certain that consequences are faced after resulting in fatalities and harm of numerous Palestinians and covering up the nutritional restriction approach implemented by the Israeli authorities."

Operational Background

The organization commenced activities in Gaza on May 26th, a week after the Israeli government had moderately reduced a total blockade on relief and commercial goods to Gaza that continued for 77 days and caused severe shortages of necessary provisions.

Subsequently, a food crisis was announced in the Palestinian urban center.

The organization's sustenance provision locations in the southern and middle regions of Gaza were operated by US private security contractors and located inside areas controlled by Israeli forces.

Relief Agency Issues

The UN and its partners said the approach violated the fundamental humanitarian principles of neutrality, impartiality and independence, and that channelling desperate people into militarised zones was inherently unsafe.

The UN's human rights office said it recorded the fatalities of no fewer than 859 Gazans trying to acquire sustenance in the vicinity of GHF sites between spring and summer months.

A further 514 persons were killed near the routes of UN and other aid convoys, it further stated.

The greater part of these people were lost their lives due to the Israeli forces, as per the organization's documentation.

Contrasting Reports

The Israeli military claimed its troops had fired warning shots at individuals who came near them in a "menacing" fashion.

The foundation stated there were no firearm incidents at the distribution centers and alleged that United Nations of using "false and misleading" figures from the Palestinian health authority administered by Hamas.

Future Implications

The GHF's future had been indefinite since Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities consented a halt in hostilities arrangement to carry out the initial stage of the United States' reconciliation proposal.

It said aid distribution would take place "absent meddling from the both sides through the international bodies and their affiliates, and the international relief society, in conjunction with other global organizations not linked whatsoever" with Hamas and Israel.

UN spokesperson the UN spokesman said on Monday that the GHF's shutdown would have "zero effect" on its operations "since we never collaborated with them".

He also said that while increased relief was entering the region since the ceasefire took effect on October 10th, it was "not enough to satisfy all requirements" of the over two million inhabitants.
